    Digital Image access in an educational environment

    The thesis Digital Image Access in an Educational Environment explores multiple approaches to image system design and deployment in the academic setting. This discourse chronicles the issues, options, design considerations, technical challenges, and organizational and social factors inherent in Internet and network access to, and use of, collections of high-resolution digital images in the university environment. Discussion focuses upon advances undertaken or participated in at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) by Wallace Library to provide digital image access to the RIT community. Efforts include the development of a local image system, the beta testing of a national image delivery system and the purchase of commercial image systems. While this examination details one institution\u27s foray into encouraging a change through digital image systems experimentation and implementation, as an enhancement to campus-based and distance education curriculum, it is intended to inform other educational institutions in their approach to the same issue

    Human security and the rise of the social

    As the concept of human security has become part of the mainstream discourse of international politics it should be no surprise that both realist and critical approaches to international theory have found the agenda wanting. This article seeks to go beyond both the realist and biopolitical critiques by situating all three – political realism, biopolitics and human security – within the history and theory of the modern rise of the social realm from late eighteenth and nineteenth century Europe. Human security is the further expansion of social forms of governance under capitalism, more specifically a form of socialpolitik than realpolitik or biopolitics. Drawing on the work of historical sociologist Robert Castel and political theorist Hannah Arendt, the article develops an alternative framework with which to question the extent to which ‘life’ has become the subject of global intervention through the human security agenda

    The Role of Gender in Descriptive Representation

    This article broadens consideration of the gender gap from voting differ ences to the larger question of affective preferences for descriptive represen tation (Pitkin 1967). The results, based on a 1993 survey of 416 individuals, suggest that women are far more likely than men to be "gender conscious" in their evaluation of a candidate or a preferred representative. Differences among the 224 women in the sample can be traced to at least four sources. Group interests and feminist attitudes are positive sources of women's preferences for descriptive representation. Conversely, conservative political views deter some women from supporting women in politics. The results also provide partial support for Carroll's (1987) psychological and economic autonomy thesis. Finally, the results suggest that in part the "gender gap" may be a generational gap most prevalent among "baby boomers."Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
